It was Li’s earliest defeat since the All England, where she fell in the opening round.
The Canadian fought spiritedly in the third game despite deficits of 8-13 and 11-16. She only managed to catch up at 19-all, but Chochuwong didn’t succumb to the pressure and grabbed the next two points for a 23-21 11-21 21-19 victory in 71 minutes.
The Thai takes on world champion Pusarla V Sindhu, who eased past Li Xue Rui in an earlier match.
